Why Fallout 4 Begins Before The Bombs Fell

Fallout 4s protagonist has lived a full life before the bombs fell, a different approach to the other protagonists in the earlier Fallout games. The Fallout games have all been set in a post-apocalyptic world, but Fallout 4 is taking a different approach to how the game can make the player feel more immersed. Fallout 4 game director Todd Howard said recently “It helps players feel more kinship with the character. For the other people in the world it is all they know. It is normal to them, but the player character is coming with a sense of the world beforehand. That kind of emotion plays heavily in our story. Any time we can connect the player with the character that’s great”

Previous Fallout characters have been either born in the wasteland or grown up in the vault and not knowing what the world was like before the bombs fell. Our main protagonist knows what it was like to live before the world was destroyed. This gives the player determination to bring some of it back. Todd continued “It goes back to the sense of loss”, “my home got blown up so I am going to rebuild it, I’m going to make it new again. That goes to the whole theme of the game and it is fun”.
