With Disney’s D23 Expo well under way we’re expecting a barrage of Marvel Studios news to hit us within hours. Spider-Man, thanks to a deal between Marvel & Sony will be becoming a fully fledged Avenger fairly shortly. But that came at the cost of Andrew Garfield losing the role of everyone’s favourite wall crawler.
Many lamented the loss of The Amazing Spider-Man star as a large number of fans seen the British actor as the best adaptation of Peter Parker on screen so far. When he had that red & blue suit on he was witty, cocky and capable of frustrating criminals with ease. Out of the suit, he was that awkward, grounded teenager everyone could relate to. He had to deal with love, and loss, and homework, and all those other tribulations all young adults will go through. It was what we all love about Spider-Man.
Then Sony ran into trouble. They were at a loss where to take the franchise past TASM2. Then there was the hacking saga that came with the release of The Interview. The future of Spider-Man seemed dead in the water, but in came Disney & Marvel to save the day. A deal was done which would see Sony hold on to the creative rights for the character, but Marvel would produce a new franchise of movies. Win-Win for everybody. Except poor Andrew Garfield.
All has been silent on the Social Network actor’s front… until now. He has finally spoken out, and very classily, about the whole scenario. Speaking to ETOnline, he had this to say:
“It feels lovely, especially because Tom Holland is a really, really great actor. He was in this movie The Impossible and he was just this incredibly powerful, sensitive, just wonderful young actor. And [he’s] a dancer, so his body’s the right [form]. I’m just really excited to just be a fan again as opposed to bearing the weight of it.”
Considering Garfield lost a multi-picture deal with the move of Spider-Man from Sony to Marvel, to say what he did with genuine delight is amazing to hear. A lovely statement from a brilliant actor.
