Post credit scenes in Marvel movies are a big thing these days, they offer clues and easter eggs in relation to upcoming movies and tie in all aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It all started with Iron Man, and who knows if Marvel knew how big an impact they would have with fans and how much fans would love them. It’s become a regular thing now. It also lets die-hard fans have a laugh at people who don’t know Marvel movies too well either, because they leave before the post credit scenes!
With this post, we want to look at the importance of Marvel’s post credit scenes within Phase One of the MCU and how they came together to tell more story than you originally thought.
It all started back in 2008, Iron not only kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe but it also kicked off Marvel’s post credit scenes. In the above scene, Tony Stark returns to his Malibu mansion late at night, here he finds S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury there waiting for him. Fury quotes Stark’s “I am Iron Man” line, and informs him that there are more superheroes in the world besides him. The big take away from this scene is Fury bringing up the Avengers Initiative, the plan to bring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together. This scene set the ball rolling for 2012’s Avengers Assemble movie.
The Incredible Hulk
This post credit scene also ties in the with Marvel one-shot The Consultant, it also links to the post credit scene from Iron Man. Here, we see General Thunderbolt Ross drowning his sorrows after his incident with Emil Blonsky. In walks Tony Stark, he pokes fun at the General, and informs him a special team is being put together. The special team he is referring to? Many speculate that to be The Avengers, which would link this scene in with the one at the end of Iron Man. However more recently some have speculated that it could tie in with Accords who will be appearing in Captain America: Civil War. Would Marvel be so bold as to set up a movie 8 years in advance? We certainly wouldn’t put it past them.
Iron Man 2
The Iron Man 2 post credit scene sets up, or more so foreshadows Thor’s arrival in his movie. For anyone that has seen Thor, knows that he is stripped of his powers and banished to Midgard (Earth) his hammer lands on earth before he does, it lands in New Mexico (half way through Iron Man 2. Agent Coulson informs Tony Stark he has to leave to take care of something in New Mexico – so the movie foreshadows the post credit scene. This post credit scenes shows how S.H.I.E.L.D. gets involved with Thor’s hammer.
This post credit scene ties in with several movies. Firstly it ties in with Captain America: The First Avenger; in this scene Dr. Eric Selvig is brought to a secret underground S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, where he is greeted by Director Fury. Fury shows him the Tesseract which everyone remembers from the first Captain America movie. It was the weapon that the Red Skull planned to use to conquer the world. It was last scene being fished out of the ocean by Howard Stark when they were looking for Captain America. S.H.I.E.L.D. hopes to harness the power of the Tesseract for world benefit. Fury asks Selvig to head its research, and Selvig, who is actually being controlled by Loki, agrees. This scene ties in with the first Thor movie, as it shows that Loki survived his fall off the edge of the Bifrost at the end of the film, and it also shows that he has found another way to work his way to the throne he believes he was born to rule from.
Finally, this scene most importantly ties in with Avengers Assemble, we have the Loki set up as the main villain, and the Tesseract as part of his arsenal. This may be the most important post credit scene as it sets up bringing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together, it brings the Avengers Initiative Nick Fury mentioned in the first post credit scene to fruition.
This post credit scene sets the ball rolling for the big blow off in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This foreshadows Avengers: Infinity Wars Part 1 & 2, which will see the Avengers face off against the mad titan Thanos. In this scene, the Other informs Thanos that Loki has failed to secure the Tesseract. When he brings up the subject of the Avengers, saying that challenging them would be like courting Death, Thanos gets up out of his throne and smiles sadistically. This scene gives us our first glimpse at the greater foe for the Avengers, and had fans wanting to see more of him.
Marvel’s Cinematic Universe is a highly complex universe with connections within connections, easter eggs within easter eggs. Marvel are excellent at linking all there movies together. The post credit scenes in Phase One done a huge job of connecting all the films together & all to lead up to Avengers Assemble. This was the big pay off for Phase One. As mentioned at the start of the post, they have gotten over so well with die-hard Marvel fans, all of whom stay back once the film is over to see what films Marvel are going to connect together, to see what links they will give away.
While post credit scenes can be confusing when watching by themselves, keeping in mind other post credit scenes and the Marvel films, they do paint a bigger picture and story that Marvel are still trying to tell.
We’ll take a look at Phase 2 over the coming days.
