Spotlight (Review)

Ahead of its tremendous Best Picture win at this years Academy Awards – we check out this story for ourselves.
Spotlight tells the true story fromĀ 2001, where editor Marty Baron (Liev Schreiber) of The Boston Globe assigns a team of very intelligent journalists to investigate allegations against John Geoghan, a priest accused of molesting more than 80 boys over 3 decades. Led by editor Walter “Robby” Robinson (Michael Keaton), reporters Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo), Matt Carroll (Brian D’Arcy James) and Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) interview the victims and try to unseal sensitive documents. The reporters make it their mission to provide proof to the world of what the Roman Catholic Church have tried to keep hidden.

Right off the bat this was a very true and hard hitting film with tremendous performances throughout the entire run-time.
Spotlight did not let the audience have a chance to breathe throughout as it gave an abundance of very unnerving and sometimes upsetting shocking scenes.
We applauded this, as we feel it was very necessary not to sugar coat the true-life story behind the facts.

Michael Keaton yet again he has still got what it takes to be a leading man as he came off of the very successful Best Picture winner Birdman – showing that he won’t back down to fight those responsible – he gave a very good performance and justified his real-life character to a tee!

The supporting cast were also incredible. Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreider, Stanley Tucci and Brian D’Arcy James gave intense and very satisfying to watch digs throughout in which we would consider one of the perfect castings from this years awards line-ups.

But the one who stole the show for us, was the great Mark Ruffalo. He truly deserved his nod for Best Supporting Actor as he brought a whole new game to the table.
He showed that his acting chops have not ceased. The three time nominee – is a powerhouse through out in what we think could be one of the better acted performances thus far. We were blown-away by how important this film was to him and have now, even more respect for the great actor!

Actor/Writer/Director Tom McCarthy has proven that a story that shook the world needed to be made to remind everyone of the events and we couldn’t agree with him more.

Spotlight is one of the best films of last year and we truly agree it deserves all the recognition it gets from here on out. A must see from us!

(Personal rating 5/5) Nerd out!
