The DCEU has been kicked off with Batman v Superman and from here on in we’re getting a raft of DC movies featuring the likes of Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad and Aquaman.
Two of the above featured in Batman v Superman and both of the Justice League staples were definitely highlights of the movie. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman stole the show & Jason Momoa’s Aquaman was incredibly convincing in his brief appearance.
James Wan, director of the upcoming Aquaman movie, has been discussing with IGN how he wants to do something different with the character who has often been the heel of the joke of many comic book fans over the years. Even the Big Bang Theory for example ridicules the character on many occasions. James Wan on the other hand, wants to make him a badass – and Batman v Superman has already proved as much:
“I think Aquaman is a character that is, you know, a lot of people have made fun of over the years, and I just think it’s fun to actually show a really different, cool, badass side to this character, but at the same time, let’s not forget to have fun with it.”
Of course, WonderCon has been on in Anaheim this weekend and James Wan was asked just how much influence Zack Snyder has over this DC film. Zack Snyder is to DC as Joss Whedon was to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it is understandable that this question be raised. James Wan told us exactly how things are working on set (via CBM):
“Well, I think the story that I would like to tell is still at the end of the day my story. And that’s what’s cool with Zack, is that he’s actually very respectful of that. He’s actually helping me out in some ways with certain things that he’s doing with his [films] so that I can have better groundwork with the standalone Aquaman story.”
So that answers that then. While Zack Snyder is the overseer of the universe, James Wan and the directors of the other DC films will still be able to tell their own story. This might go some way to reassure those who are vocal critics of Snyder’s handling of the DCEU.
As stated before, DC have an entire slate of films for us and given Batman v Superman‘s box office takings so far we will be seeing the majority, if not all of those films and Aquaman is one of those that we are very excited for.
