As we all gear up for the release of Captain America Civil War which lands on the 28th of this month and kick starts Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we are getting quite a bit of news about Avengers: Infinity Wars, the 2 part film that is set to bring together everything Marvel have been working towards over the last 10 years.
The Russo brothers confirmed earlier this week that Thor would be returning for the 2 part movie (we already knew that though as Hemsworth has a movie left on his contract), they also hinted at Peter Quill aka Star Lord being involved in the film (again we aren’t surprised as the film is set to have 68 characters in it). The 2 part film has also been described as 2 different movies, hinting that part 2 may not be a direct follow on from part 1, while being interviewed by iO9, co-director Anthony Russo had the following to say:
“The movies are very very different from one another. It’s not a part one and part two scenario, necessarily. They’re just two different expressions. I think it creates a misconception that we’re shooting them at the same time.”
With movies set to take place in between both parts of the Avengers trilogy finale, it is extremely possible that those films will have big effects on the second part of Infinity War making it completely different from the first part, and adding more layers to the story that could change how the events of the second part play out.
The biggest news to come out this week about Infinity War though is that both parts will be multi-perspective films, meaning we will see the war play out from several different perspective. Recently the Russo brothers sat down with the guys over at Comic Book and here is what they had to say when asked about Infinity War and how it would be bigger than Civil War:
“It’s a culmination of everything that’s occurred in the Marvel Universe up to the point where the Marvel Universe is released. Some of those films haven’t even hit yet. We’re going to be dealing with some of the characters from those movies who are going to be in Infinity War. They’re massive in scope and scale but that’s the point. The point is for them to be as ambitious as they possibly can be. They’re going to be multi-perspective films. They’re not called ‘Captain America: Infinity War,’ they’re called Infinity War. You’re going to be moving around through different perspectives of the characters. It’s like Nashville for super heroes. It’s storytelling that is vignetted storytelling. It’s to composite all of them under one story – everybody. You can culminate without all of them, so…”
We here at Nerd Lowdown would be lying if we said we weren’t intrigued by this idea, if it is done correctly this could pay off in a big way, with Infinity War set to have 68 characters across both parts, seeing how it plays out from multiple different perspectives could add so much depth and emotion to the film. Picture this, say Hawkeye gets killed (we have nothing against Hawkeye by the way) and Black Widow sees this, we get to see how she seen Clint die, then it may cut to Thor and how he seen it, then Cap, then Tony etc. While it wouldn’t have to show how everyone seen it happen, but you get the idea, it could add a lot to the film.
Or another way Marvel could approach it would show why each group is getting involved in the war and the perspective they have on why they need to get involved. Say we get the Avengers’ take on why Thanos must be stopped, we get the Guardians of the Galaxy’s take on it, the remains of SHIELD and why they get involved. We know the war will be over the Infinity Stones so they’ll play a big factor in the different perspectives the film may have.
At the moment all we can do is speculate as to how this film will play out in multi-perspectives and what the Russo brothers have planned for the 2 part movie, we know they have a great understanding of balance character screen times, with a huge roster of characters for this movie that may prove to be a challenge, should they get it right, will help make the 2 part film the perfect end to what Marvel have been working towards.
