The duo have quite a bit of history throughout many comic book arcs and are one of the most popular partnerships going, but now the Deadpool brain-trust want Deadpool & Spider-Man to share the silver screen!
We’re just over the fact that Spider-Man is joining the Avengers in this month’s Captain America: Civil War thanks to Marvel & Sony partnering up to allow the Web-Crawler appear in the MCU. Two of the Deadpool creative team, Simon Kinberg & Tim Miller now want to bring Peter Parker into the world of Wade Wilson which we can only assume would be one of the most fantastical, brilliant creations ever. Speaking with SuperheroHype the pair discussed the possibility of a crossover:
Miller: “Simon and I have been trying to build bridges.”
Kinberg: “I would love to see it. Both of us are close with [Marvel’s] Kevin [Feige], we respect and love Kevin. If it were even remotely possible, we will find a way ’cause we’d would love to see it. I just don’t know if it would be possible.”
Of course, the possibility of it is the major question. There’s no doubt this would be a major money-spinner for all involved and something that comic book fans would literally die to see play out on the big screen. You can already picture Ryan Reynolds and Tom Holland swapping one-liners and getting on each other’s nerves to the point of explosion. The potential is endless. But alas, there are many road blocks…
Sony & Marvel have entered a deal to share Spider-Man. Marvel have gotten the chance to include the character in Civil War along with developing a solo movie (and no doubt a trilogy). Sony still hold the creative rights to the character but the subtleties of the deal are not public knowledge. It is very possible that as a consequence of the Marvel/Sony deal, Marvel have stipulated that Sony may not enter a similar agreement with another studio, Fox in this case. Meaning Fox would have to go directly to Marvel to make a similar deal for Deadpool to appear in the MCU, hence why Kinberg & Miller are attempting to sweeten up Kevin Feige. Again, Sony may have stipulated that Marvel may not enter an agreement with Fox. If this were to happen however, it may cause some slight detours on Marvel’s grand road map that sits in Kevin Feige’s office. Another issue is that Sony, Marvel and Disney (Marvel’s parent company) may not want Spider-Man showing up in an R-Rated movie. Spider-Man is so desirable as a property due to his merchandisability. Disney can’t sell toys off the back of a movie kids cannot go see.
If by some kind of sick & twisted miracle this crossover was to become reality (Remember, we didn’t think Deadpool would ever become a reality) then it would carry many bonuses. Deadpool exists in the X-Men Movies Universe, Spider-Man exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Therefore, if Deadpool & Spider-Man were to crossover we’re now playing a whole new ball game in the superhero genre. Avengers v X-Men sort of ball game. Wolverine taking on the Hulk. Cyclops & Iron Man teaming up. Spider-Man rushing to vomit as he watches Deadpool decapitate an agent of HYDRA.
Unfortunately, the prospects don’t look good, but by Thor’s Hammer how cool would it be? We never know what the future holds though, and remember Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War is said to have 60+ heroes after all… *wink wink nudge nudge Marvel, Sony & Fox*
