Is A Live Action Pokemon Movie On The Way?

Pokemon is without a doubt one of the most beloved video game series and animated tv show series in the world. For the past 20 years the well known franchise has brought joy and hours of entertainment to millions worldwide. What started out as a video game series soon moved into tv shows and movies, with 18 animated movies being released so far with a 19th on the way this summer. Sadly though there has been no sign of a live action film from the popular franchise…. although one could soon be on the way.

For years fans have been begging for a remake of Pokemon red, blue and yellow for the 3DS (the best we have for now is a re-release) and for a live action movie from the franchise. One could be on the way though. According to an article published by Hollywood Reporter two major film companies are in a bidding war for the rights to the popular franchise.

Warner Bros Pictures and Legendary Pictures are supposedly in a bidding war for the rights to make a live action Pokemon movie. Apparently Legendary are out in front in the race for the rights, and one would imagine that if they are successful in obtaining them, that they will make it a big budget film hopefully based around Ash Ketchum (the main protagonist in the tv show and animated films), you couldn’t have a Pokemon movie without Ash as the main character in fairness, unless it was direct adaptation of the first set of video games, which would see the main characters being Red and Blue.

There are a few complications with Legendary’s bid for the film rights though, as according to the same article by Hollywood Reporter Legendary is owned by a Chinese conglomerate and that political tensions between China and Japan could complicate Legendary’s bid for the Pokemon rights. This could prove to be a big obstacle for Legendary to over come if they want to secure the rights to a live action Pokemon movie. However though Legendary were involved in the 2014 Godzilla movie which is a major Japanese franchise, so there is hope that they may be successful.

Could you imagine seeing the above image on a big screen with todays CGI technology? It would bring back so many childhood memories for millions worldwide and bring about something that is long over due in the eyes of fans worldwide. We here at Nerd Lowdown are hoping that either of the two companies win the rights to make a live action Pokemon movie as it is something that needs to happen sooner rather than later.
