Ready yourself for a trip through nostalgia town because we’re about to revisit the world of Space Jam!
Many will remember the glorious time that the Looney Tunes teamed up with NBA legend Michael Jordan to take on the Monstars in a basketball game, essentially playing for the lives of the Looney Tunes (sort of). If you don’t remember then you better close down this article, google ‘Space Jam’, enjoy & come back later.
Now, news has emerged this evening that a sequel has been green lit starring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck… and LeBron James! This was rumoured some time ago but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Space Jam 2 is a go with James in the lead role and Justin Lin (Star Trek: Beyond, Fast & Furious 6) in the directors chair! Andrew Dodge & Alfredo Botello are set to pen the movie with development going through Lin’s production company, Perfect Storm Entertainment.
For fans of the Looney Tunes and the original Space Jam movie this is amazing news. While the original wasn’t necessarily a critical or major financial success, it has become a bit of a cult classic. LeBron James has also been cutting his teeth in the acting world with a role in Trainwreck (starring Amy Schumer & Bill Hader). Much like Michael Jordan, he will be playing himself in Space Jam 2.
Where will Space Jam 2 go? Well, the obvious option is to have the Monstars come back and have another crack at stealing the Looney Tunes for their amusement park. Perhaps they have heard that Michael Jordan has retired and want to play the Looney Tunes again, stealing the powers of other NBA stars before the Looney Tunes enlist the help of LeBron James. Some might say that lightning does not strike twice but this will be a new Space Jam for a new generation. Alternatively, a new and more sinister force may come for the Looney Tunes but the one thing you can guarantee is that there will be an epic game of basketball mixed with the slapstick comedy we all love from the Looney Tunes.
