Recently Pixar Studios (you know… those guys that made Toy Story, Up and Brave) have been a on a big sequels buzz. Not including Finding Dory (a sequel to 2003’s Finding Nemo) 3 out of the next 4 Pixar movies will be sequels.
Their next 4 movies are Cars 3 (2017), Coco (2017), Toy Story 4 (2018), and The Incredibles 2 (2019) with Coco in 2017 being the only original movie to come out since The Little Dinosaur which was release last year. So as you can see Pixar is loving sequels at the moment. After Toy Story 4 Pixar do plan on releasing 4 original movies with the first two are slated for release on March and June of 2020.
Pixar President Jim Morris recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about their upcoming plans for future movie releases and this is what he has to say: “Most studios jump on doing a sequel as soon as they have a successful film, but our business model is a filmmaker model, and we don’t make a sequel unless the director of the original film has an idea that they like and are willing to go forward on. A sequel in some regards is even harder [than the original] because you’ve got this defined world which, on the one hand, is a leg up, and on the other hand has expectations that you can’t disappoint on.”
Morris also elaborated a bit more on if we will get sequels to Ratatouille, Wall-E and Inside Out with the following: “Pete Docter [who directed Inside Out] has an original idea for his next film. Brad Bird, being the director of Ratatouille, is working on The Incredibles and we haven’t really spoken about [a sequel to] that. And WALL-E is close to my heart since I produced it. It would be good to back and visit that world and let everybody know that the humans actually survived again after getting back to their burnt-out planet. But that was really a love story that had its beginning, middle, and end, so we’re not really planning any further stories in those worlds at this point.”
So as it stands the jury is out for sequels of these 3 beloved Pixar movies. This is not to say that the door has been completely shut on sequels happen, Pixar are just focusing on original movies after the release of Toy Story 4. They want to bring fans of their movies some new characters and original stories rather than rely so much on sequels of their hit movies. As with making sequel after sequel, you run the risk of watering down what made the original films so good.
So while we may not be getting any sequels after Toy Story 4 we will still be getting some great Pixar movies, so never fear, Pixar will still deliver, and we have loads of great films to look forward to. We are looking forward to all of the films Pixar will be bringing us over the next few years.
