Top 10 Nerdy Christmas Specials

It’s that time of year again! Let’s stuff our faces, get drunk and sing merrily as we count down our top 10 favourite nerdy Christmas specials.

None of these specials are particularly good or bad but all are geeky and full of holiday cheer! Note: This list is of specials, not feature films. That is why Die Hard, Nightmare Before Christmas etc are not featured below! Sorry!

10) Lobo’s ParaMilitary Christmas Special.

Probably not one for the younger kids, but it’s still F**king festive Okay?!! This Fan made gem was brought to us the guys at Fanboy Theatre. The special is only 13 mins long and follows DC comics character Lobo the Mercenary as he tracks down Saint Nick for some Deadly, but Jolly, Violence.

Featuring strong language, some questionable acting and a special appearance of the Easter Bunny this Christmas special is sure to tickle your sides this year and definitely worth the watch if you haven’t seen it already. Lobo is most certainly on Santa’s Naughty list this year!

9)A Muppet Family Christmas.

Before Jim Henson gave us the epic, A Muppet Christmas Carol, featuring Michael Caine as Scrooge, there was this special from 1987 which I would put on almost every Christmas as a kid. Fozzie Bear organises a Christmas away at his mother’s farmhouse with the rest of the Muppet cast, hoping to have a very festive time indeed. Unbeknownst to him that his mother has actually booked herself a holiday in Malibu he shows up and ruins her plans.

This special was the first time we see all Henson television properties together! The Muppets, Muppet Babies, Fraggle Rock and Sesame Street! Of course when you get over a set full of people singing carols with their hands stuck up a puppets ass, it is all great fun!

8) He Man & She-Ra Christmas Special

It’s Prince Adam’s and Princess Adoras Birthday (Which inadvertently and conveniently reminds the Queen of the Earth Holiday, Christmas) because she forgot to tell her husband she is from Earth! Orzo ends up being chased by Skeletor into Earths dimension and brings back some kids to Eternia who are way too much in love with Christmas Spirit (In my opinion)

Fearing the Christmas Spirit and its power Skeletor eventually kidnaps the kids but ends up becoming a little nicer thanks to all the Christmasness and ends up saving the Day! Featuring a very bizarre and creepy Adam dressed as Santa. Well, he does have the power after all.

7) Pinky and The Brain ‘Christmas Wish’

Everyone knows these two mice! One is a genius the others insane! Well the Christmas of 1995, Brain was about to achieve his ultimate goal of taking over the world. ( Something we all know he tried to do every night) He designs a mesmerising doll and has Santa deliver one to every household on Earth. With his plan about to be a success he reads Pinky’s  (Voiced by the magnificent Rob Paulsen) letter to Santa wishing that his friend would get anything he asked for.  This heart felt and unexpected twist is some of the most emotional in the series by using Pinky’s naive and simple nature to convey the true meaning of Christmas.

6) Super Mario Bros. ‘Koopa Klaus’

Hey! It’s- a Mario Christmas Special! Mario and Luigi (Live action version) watch TV and are interrupted by a child saying he is running away because his family don’t love him anymore. (So come sit on a racially stereotypical man’s lap and learn about the meaning of Christmas, shall we?) They cut to the animated segment and King Koopa, now calling himself Koopa Klaus, is heading off to the North Pole to impersonate Santa and oversee the destruction of all the toys. Also arriving in the North Pole are Mario and friends. Thinking they were going on Holiday somewhere tropical.  (Not too smart, are they?) see King Koopa fly towards Santa’s Workshop and know he is up to something nasty!

Long story short Mario and friends save Santa and Christmas by using the warmth of Christmas Spirit! Mamma Mia! Christmas has been saved!

5) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles  ‘The Christmas Alien’

“Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the town, Turtle Santa drove like crazy to not let the kids down.”

Another biased entry from yours truly, but I absolutely love this episode from the 2003 TMNT series.  Walking through Central Park at Christmas Time (Covered up, like a turtle should) Michelangelo admires the time of year when he hears a noise in the snow. A stray kitten, (Which he names Klunk) scooping him up he heads over to the nearest toy shop and talks about all the popular toys this year, one which happens to be called Lil Orphan Alien. From around the corner he hears a break in and thugs saying they are going to steal the toys meant for the orphanage and sell them on the black market! (Scumbags)

After some butt kicking ninja action, Mikey manages to get the toys back and persuade his brothers to help him deliver them to the needy kids. (Dressed as Freakin Elves, I might add!) Mikey looks into the camera and exclaims “Happy Holidays Everyone!”

4) Power Rangers ‘Alpha’s Magical Christmas’

In this well, strange, Christmas special, Alpha is annoyed that the Power Rangers won’t be back for Christmas (Well they might be busy saving the world!) he comes up the ingenious and kind of creepy plan to get them to visit by Singing Carols with children from all over the world. (Yes he and Zordon teleport random Children onto the ship, *Tut, Tut, Tut*)

This is the first and only Christmas special centre around the Power Ranger universe. (Probably the best option not to continue with more)  This special is magically bad and with poor production quality and having a really senseless and really silly story about Alpha 5 that was irrelevant. It is in the so bad it’s good category! and definitely worth a watch for a giggle and nostalgia.

3) Family  Guy  ‘ Road to the North Pole’

After referencing many other Christmas movies, like Home Alone and Frosty the Snowman, Stewie becomes enraged and vows to kill old Saint Nick. Both he and Brain head to the North Pole only to find a gloomy factory, with pollution spreading across the sky. Finding a sick and depressed Santa, the old man explains that the Christmas Spirit is gone because of the greedy people of the world always wanting fancier and fancier gifts. (Not exactly far off are they with their Christmas time is killing us number) When Santa collapses Stewie and Brain declare they will deliver the presents but fail. (Pulling out more and more ridiculous horrors making it even funnier.) On Christmas morning everyone wakes up to nothing under the tree. Turning on the TV a broadcast explains that Santa is too sick and the world’s greed is killing him. The World agrees to one gift per year for all and Christmas is restored!

2) Star Wars Christmas Special with Christmas in the Stars albumchrismasstarwars

Almost everyone’s favourite bad nerdy Christmas special.  Even George Lucas hates this crazy piece of S**T.  That said, it has to be experienced, and if you haven’t seen it, I beg of you. Please watch!

In a nutshell the story is about Chewie getting home for the Wookie Holiday Kashyyyk (Which is basically Christmas) So the story begins with Chewie’s family expecting him home, but here is where is goes downhill. They are all speaking Wookie… with no subtitles… for ten minutes without interruption . *Sigh* The special has strange and awkward scenes, with one of them having Chewie’s  Dad watching what appears to be porn?! The Christmas in the Stars album that came with some VHS versions of the also had Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) singing most of the carols, and The album is notable for featuring the first professional recording of Jon Bon Jovi  who sang lead vocals on the song “R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas. (Wtf right?)

1) Batman the Animated Series – Christmas with The Joker.

The first episode to feature the clown prince of crime in the animated series, is set in the beautiful festive season of Christmas.  The Joker escapes from Arkham and makes sure Batman and Robin (Also his first appearance in the series) have a busy Christmas eve, by kidnapping Commissioner Gordon, Harvey Bullock and Summer Gleeson and broadcasting it on the air, calling it the Awful Lawful Family.  ( If you didn’t know, this is where we got that “Jingle Bells, Batman Smells” song we used to sing in the playground, yes Joker made it up) Defeating Joker, Batman and Robin can go back to Wayne Manor to watch It’sWonderful Life (Maybe for a Billionaire, Bruce)
