Before X-Men: Apocalypse hit theaters last year there were rumors of what the next film might be based on and when it might be based. Fans began to speculate that it might be based on the long standing fan-favorite Dark Phoenix Saga comic. That speculation was confirmed by Fox after the release of Apocalypse and today they revealed more news about the film.
Fox announced today that X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg is set to make his directorial debut with X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Kinberg has either been a writer and or producer on X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Logan, as well as upcoming films New Mutants and Deadpool 2. So fans know the next film will be in good hands with a man that is quite familiar with the X-Men franchise.
Not only did Fox confirm who would be directing the upcoming X-Men film, but they also announced some of the cast as well. We got confirmation that the stars of X-Men: Apocalypse will return for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. This includes Jennifer Lawrence as Raven/Mystique, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr/Magneto, James McAvoy as Charles Xavier/Professor X, Nicholas Hoult as Henry “Hank” McCoy/Beast, Alexandra Shipp as Ororo Munroe/Storm, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers/Cyclops, and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix will see X-Men forerunner Brian Singer stepping away from the franchise as he is looking to pursue other projects and it also clears up the future of Lawrence, McAvoy, Hoult and Fassbender as their 3 movie contracts were up and fans began to speculate if they would return. It will be interesting to know what the terms of their new deals are as some of them had expressed an interest to leave the franchise.
We know that X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be a direct sequel to Apocalypse and is due to be set in the 1990’s. As evident by the films title, it will be based around the “The Dark Phoenix Saga” comic which is one of the most beloved X-Men comics of all time. Fans of the comics and the films will be hoping that this attempt to adapt the Dark Phoenix Sage story line will play out better than the last time it was attempted in X-Men: The Last Stand (fingers crossed).
